The Difference Between a Work-From-Home Job and Work-From-Home Business

Many women who start looking for work from home are often overwhelmed by the amount of information out there and the overwhelming number of scams they come across. One thing to understand before you get started is what you are really looking for. There are work-from-home jobs and then there are work-from-home businesses. Many people start their search not understanding the differences between the two and not understanding which one they want. There are pros and cons to both depending on your situation and needs but it is important to understand these differences when you start your search.

A work-from-home job is just that-a job. You will be working for another company as either an employee or an independent contractor. There is usually training and most work-from-home companies require you to set a schedule and commit to it whether this is weekly or monthly. Work-from-home jobs pay by the hour or sometimes by the minute if it is a phone related job. There should be very minimal fees if any involved. If you are working as an independent contractor most states allow the company to charge you the cost of the background check or credit check but besides this there should be no training fees or application fees of any kind. This is a big warning sign, just as you would not pay these kinds of fees for a real job, you should not expect to pay them for a work-from-home job.

A work-from-home business is different. Some people run across them and assume they are a scam because of fees involved but you must remember, it is a business and as with any business there are going to be start up costs. Pros of running a work-from-home business are the flexibility. You do not have to commit to a set schedule as with a work-from-home job and you can work as much or as little as you need to. The income from a work-from-home business can be an upside or a downside, depending on your situation. The downside is that there is no guaranteed income like with a job where you know exactly how much you can expect to make each week. The upside is that often if you are good at the business you can expect to make more than a job. Work-from-home businesses can mean joining a company as a representative such as direct sales. These companies offer you the flexibility of a business but offer their already known brand and knowledge as an easy way to get started. These companies include Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Usborne Books, Avon and many others. The other option includes starting your own business from scratch which can offer even more opportunity for making money but also more risk of loss and a lot more work to get up and running. If you choose to start a business, choose something you know you will love doing and be passionate about. I would love to hear stories from others as to how they decided on their business and why.
